Hide it under a bushel……no I’m gonna let it shine
If you can’t be a light, then all that is left is for you to exist in darkness…..
We are all not leaders…. A senior woman once told me this and it really got under my skin, oh do not get me wrong i do understand that in any situation someone must lead and another follow. however that only means that we all can not lead at the same time. To suggest that we can not all be leaders, that some are born to lean and others are born to follow, is as prejudice as racism or sexism such a suggestion is as much bigotry as slavery. Perhaps it is predicated on that very institution… slavery.
We may not all be similarly skilled within the same disciplines, yet that does not render someone any less skilled, unique, talented, purposed, focused and passionate than any other. In short it makes everyone fully capable of being a leader in some respect. Even the ability to follow is demeaned in such a suggestion, to be able to aptly follow requires a level of humility that truly only someone capable of transcending their pride and gaining a height of empathy and understanding that any leader would require.
To not be a leader is tantamount to not being able to hold a light to the darkness which surrounds us all; this includes ignorance of our humanity, our social, economic, scholastic and spiritual being. Granted many may fall into such categorization; and i do not mean ignorance in the most general sense of the word, i am speaking about a failure to even seek knowledge, a failure to question the various dogma we are fed in our lives.
We have learned to some how accept mediocrity as a default reaction, we have become a people who fail to have true identity out side institutions and varied social groups, we have become mere copies of what is fed to us by these institutions such as; governments, mass media, religions and so forth.
What has this lack of critical thinking led us? we are further into the dark concerning who we are in this modern world, with the ability to be in touch with many things and people perhaps we have lost the ability to be in touch with ourselves. This is not some vain hope for meaning in life, but a more exacting search for purpose. To not be able to hold a light to the darkness which exists within us how can we then hold a light to the darkness which surrounds us? Will we be left waiting for a saviour to come and show us the way? will we continue to wait for institutions and people to guide us, to spoon feed us our definition, likes and dislikes, our interests and opinions or perhaps there is some appeal to the general stifling of creativity and independent thinking. Perhaps in the end i am the one with the absurd notion of critical thought and laying questions to the very idea of what we are fed is being human, after all why think when someone else can do the thinking for you?
